Headshots Vs. Branding Photography: Which is Right for You?
If you’ve ever wrestled with the question “What photo best represents me or my brand?- you’re not alone…
Segment 1 — The Golden Age of Photography: Hollywood Invents the Face
Before modern softboxes, digital retouching, and electronic flash, Hollywood photographers had already learned how to create character with light. This segment explores the sculptural lighting of George Hurrell, the carefully manufactured star image, the portrait studio craft of the 1930s–1950s, and a personal 1953 connection through Amos Carr Studios in Hollywood. From Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, and Hedy Lamarr to loop and Rembrandt lighting, exposure discipline, and modern recreations, the story reveals one enduring principle: light does more than illuminate — light interprets.
Beautiful couture portraiture begins with light, intention, and a connection with the person in front of the camera. Held on September 16, 2026, my PPA-sponsored “The Couture Experience” Lighting Workshop explored the relationship between photographic lighting, elegant styling, and expressive portraiture. Join me for a look at the workshop and the creative decisions that bring a fashion-inspired portrait to life.
Artificial intelligence is not the end of photography, but perhaps its newest evolution. From Gutenberg’s printing press to digital imaging, history has shown that new technologies rarely destroy artistic expression — they expand it. AI now allows photographs to restore fading memories, reimagine important moments, and breathe new life into history itself. Whether reviving a child’s treasured parakeet through a faded photograph, restoring damaged historical imagery, or transforming imagination into visual storytelling, AI becomes less a replacement for creativity and more an extension of it. Much like vinyl records and vacuum tube amplifiers remain cherished in the digital age, traditional photography retains its artistic soul while new tools broaden the language of human expression.
History keeps its ledgers neat—dates, patents, premieres, applause measured in curtain calls and kilowatts. But between those lines, there are nights no archive records. This is one of them.
In the thin, electric air of Colorado Springs, where storms climb the mountains like living things, Nikola Tesla built a cathedral of wire and intention. His laboratory stood apart from the town’s lamplit streets, a place where lightning was invited indoors and obeyed. Copper coils rose like musical staves. Sparks leapt, sang, and vanished. Tesla called it research. Others called it sorcery.
